Curved Cordwood & Corners

If you want a curved cordwood home, but would like an attached garage and some right angles for kitchen cabinets and a workshop, this home is a good combination of styles. Don Gerdes, an engineer from Reedsburg, Wisconsin created and built a design that combines the best of both worlds.

Don Gerdes Reedsburg11

Below is Don’s architectural rendering.  He wanted to have an attached two car garage, a curved wall great room and square corners for his workshop and kitchen.  Many folks who build round, or multi-sided eventually yearn for a couple of right angles.  That is why Pythagoras helped us understand the Golden Rectangle and why it was considered by the Greeks to be of the most pleasing proportion.

Cordwood For Sale

What is the resale value of a cordwood home?   Many people don’t consider this when they are planning their cordwood home.  Here are examples of cordwood homes that have sold in the past few years.  The deciding sale factor in each one was the “quality of build.”   Well built cordwood walls, good overall appearance and excellent interior choices were often the deciding factor in having a SOLD sign placed in the yard.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATom Huber’s beautiful cordwood home in Watervliet, Michigan sold quickly.  The buyers said that the deciding factor was the excellent cordwood and stone work.   Here is how the house was listed.  http://daycreek.com/huber/ rockmart-ga-built-in-the-late-70s-with-logoAbove, this cordwood home was built in the 1970’s in Rockmart, Georgia.  It sold a few years ago. I think everyone can appreciate the long front porch, the sturdy, off grade foundation and the well done cordwood walls.

Cordwood Lodge

Cordwood is usually chosen as a building style in order to save money. The fact that it uses locally available, sustainable materials is an added incentive.  However, sometimes cordwood is built to impress, and here is a fine example.  This million dollar cordwood lodge was constructed in 1995, by a wealthy family from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   It is located in Northern Wisconsin in the lake rich area northeast of the beautiful area of Minocqua.  cordwood-mansion-on-star-lake-with-logoThis timber framed, cordwood infill beauty is located on a gated, private road.  The 62′ x 42′ lodge boasts a full basement, a field stone fireplace and three floors.

Star Lake architects homeAs good fortune would have it, the architect for this cordwood mansion lived right next store, in a beautiful cordwood cottage.  He designed the cordwood lodge in the shape of a capital I so there would be an entrance and exit that would be shielded from the elements.

lake-side-1-cropped-more-with-logoThis is an excellent view from the east side of the building.  The fieldstone foundation keeps the cordwood up “off of grade” and allows for proper air circulation.  The cordwood is 18″ Northern White Cedar.  It was built with three 4″ mortar beads of a vermiculite/lime/sand slurry (vermiculite was used in place of sawdust).  There are two 3″ dry vermiculite insulation rows down the middle of the logs.  The roof is standing seam green metal.

Image

The architect also used a capital I for his cottage, which he built within a post and beam framework.  His cottage is also 18″ Northern White Cedar.  He asked me to not use the name of the owner of the Million Dollar Cordwood Lodge and I have respected his wishes.

Image

The interiors of the lodge and the architect’s cottage are both attractive and tastefully appointed.  The Lodge has sold two times since it was built, which is typical in a highly prized recreational area. This simply shows what can be done when money is no object, however, it is relatively easy to build a modest cordwood home (depending on your parameters) for much, much less.

Cordwood Construction by Tom Huber in Michigan & New York

Tom Huber is a cordwood savant who builds with nature on his mind.  An eclectic by nature, Tom espouses the philosophy of Christopher Alexander and his idea of using “Pattern Language” to create a homestead that is both meaningful and beautiful.  Let me walk you through some of friend Tom’s creations.

Cedar Eden cropped with logo

This is his latest building called Cedar Eden.  Made of Northern White Cedar, which is both beautiful and long lasting.  Tom built this complex in stages and has room for more additions.  His concept is “Build small with what you have and add on later.”

Cedar Eden 5 resized with logo

The first “add on” shows a curved cedar post on the corner.  It is certainly eye catching. Note is is on a rock foundation and the posts were not squared, but left natural.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tom’s original cordwood home was in Michigan.  This beauty sold back in 2005 when Tom took a teaching position at Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks.  It sold for the asking price and the buyer commented that the well done cordwood was the deciding factor in the purchase.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The beautiful stone work, well laid cordwood, bottle ends and wavy pine siding speak about a builder who cares deeply about his creation.  Tom has the “artistic chops” to back up his work.

Tom Huber cordwood siding with stone with logo

The sitting porch is done with stone and the cordwood is actually “cordwood siding.”  Cordwood siding is 1″ discs of cordwood nailed or screwed to a mortar painted surface.  Bet it fooled you:0)

Sierra Exif JPEG

The carefully laid out stone wall has insulation between it and the interior wall. The interior wall is made with 4″ cordwood stubbies which allow the cordwood wall to extend down to the interior floor, while the stone protects and beautifies the exterior.

Huber Shed MI with logo

Tom’s first attempt at cordwood resulted in this very attractive cordwood shed.  The stone protects the sides and the cordwood gives a feeling of additional sturdiness and warmth.

Should you get bitten, not by mosquitoes, but by the cordwood bug, you may wish to take a look at www.cordwoodconstruction.org   Read the articles by clicking on the 9 color photos, check out the Cordwood eNewsletter on the top menu, look at the workshop schedule and if you want to learn more check out all the ebooks and hard copy books at the Online Cordwood Bookstore.

The latest and in my opinion, the best book on cordwood is Cordwood Construction Best Practices, which was just updated.

Alan & Rebecca’s 16 sided cordwood home made of 12″ eastern red cedar.

At the edge of Ouchita Forest ten miles south of Wilburton, Ok, is a small community of homes in a serene and quiet treed area called the United Spanish War Veterans Colony.  About 100 veterans and their families live here.

A Hearthstone free standing stove takes care of all their heating requirements. Easter red cedar has beautiful patterning.

We acquired a three quarter acre lot here, and built a 16 sided cordwood home.  It has an earth floor which has 8 coats of resin for hardening, and a living roof planted with sedum.  The house is approximately 900 sq. ft., one bedroom 1 ½ bath. The ceiling is douglas fir and the structure is all locally milled pine.  We used local cedar for our 12’ thick cordwood walls.  The windows are low e and double hung.  We added a sunroom on the south side for solar gain in the winter.  It could be used as a second bedroom. We added a mud room on the north side where the main door is, for shoes and coats.

The red cedar is a weed tree in the southern middle portion of the country and it is naturally resistant to insects.

The kitchen and bathroom cabinets are knotty alder built custom for us by Quality Cabinets in Quinton, OK.  The interior is all open with partial walls 7 feet high for the bath and bedroom.  We have a soapstone wood stove that keeps us more than toasty in the winter. There is plenty of wood on the property to cut and split for years to come.  We cool it with a heat pump.  Our biggest electric bill in the summer has been $65.00.  The county maintains the streets here and we pay no property taxes.  We built a 10 by 12 deck on the east side of the house.  Our water heater is propane on demand.  You’ll never run out of hot water in the shower. There is a community hall here where a pot luck supper is held once a month for residents.  Breakfast is served every Saturday morning at 9 AM.  Holidays are celebrated at the hall also, with the colony providing the meat and each family bringing a dish to share.
